How to: Light A Cigar
Perfectly Light A Cigar For An Even Burn
Lighting a cigar is not like lighting the tip of a cigarette or the wick of a candle it takes longer. In other words, patience is key, especially when you are starting out. Mistakes happen even if you are a seasoned cigar veteran, so just accept it and try not to let errors ruin what should be an enjoyable process.
Choosing the right cigar torch lighter
A properly lit cigar is important because it means all the components (wrapper, binder and filler) will be evenly lit, thus imparting the flavors of the blend as the maker intended them to be experienced. Additionally, you won’t be fighting an uneven burn while you're smoking, which can add hassle to a time that should be relaxing.
Warm up the cigar
Warm the tobacco in the foot of the cigar. The foot of the cigar is the part you'll actually light. Hold the flame below the foot without touching it, Rotate the cigar a few times until the foot is evenly warmed. This will warm up your tobacco and make it easier to light.
Light The Cigar
Hold the flame in front of the cigar without touching it. Next, inhale just enough so that the cigar is lit. Make sure not to inhale the smoke.
Insure Even Burning
Lightly blow on the foot of the cigar (optional). You can do this to make sure that the light is evenly distributed. To check if the cigar is fully lit, turn the lit end towards your mouth and gently blow on it; the lit portions will light up the orange.
The best way to get the perfect light is to use a Newport Zero lighter designed specifically for cigars, with butane for fuel and a flame (or multiple flames) wide enough to easily light a cigar. There are dozens of different cigar lighters by Newport Zero, and which one is best for you is a matter of personal preference. The most important requirement is performance—a lighter should fit easily in your hand, ignite easily, and work without fail every time.
